Reforestation project from fruit-bearing trees

Following Haiti’s increasing desertification, we must do something fast. One solution is an intensive reforestation effort. To support the fight towards a healthier environment, the Joseph Guiteau Foundation is launching the Reforestation project from fruit-bearing trees. This project aims at sustaining the needs in rural areas, where students from farming families are already in contact with the land and natural environment. They need support. Intensive and wide reforestation is very important considering the damaging consequences of the recent deforestation. Planting a series of fruit-bearing trees addresses a very crucial need and corresponds to Haiti’s agricultural vocation. Planting a tree that bears comestible fruits has three major benefits: first, it diminishes famine, second, it decreases erosion, and third, it helps the farming economy.

Therefore, we plan to subsidize, for a 5 year (or more) period, many small projects related to the reforestation from fruit-bearing trees. We will buy mango pits and leave them trailing around, particularly Franconian mangoes, which are very appreciated in the non-producing countries. The mango pits will be collected, planted and nursed by our propagators, to then be distributed in rural schools throughout the country. The trees produced during one school year will be replanted each year by the students themselves, on a day called “The Tree Day”. It’s a project requiring the participation of all schools from rural communities, under the Haut Patronage of the Ministries of Education and Environment, the Youth and Civic Services Secretariat, and with the assistance of all the concerned authorities of the communities involved in the project.
